Warmblood is a group of breeds and types generally
originating from Europe. They are bred specifically for equestrian sports such as
show jumping and dressage. Technically speaking, many commentators believe that most of the so-called warmblood breeds are not "breeds" in the
sense that Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Morgans and Saddlebreds are technically different breeds. These warmblood breeds are still
evolving. Except for the Trakehner, they do not have closed their studbooks. They have
open stud books which allow other breeds to be introduced to the genetic pool for
enhancing a certain characteristic of the breed. A warmblood horse is often named
after the region that their breeding began (for example the Irish Bred Warmblood). Some fairly popular warmblood breed and types
are: Holsteiner, Trakehner, Oldenburg, Selle Francais, Westphalian, Belgian Warmblood,
Rhinelander, Hanoverian, Bavarian Warmblood, Mecklenburger, Brandenburger, Württemberger,
Dutch Warmblood, Swiss Warmblood, Austrian Warmblood, Danish Warmblood, Irish Hunter, and
Swedish Warmblood.
